Forgotten Pistons (III) The Champ’s Thirteenth Man

#3 on my Forgotten Pistons list…

#24 Tremaine Fowlkes-

Tremaine was the thirteenth man on the 04 Championship squad (Fowlkes on the left in black), sort of like being Snow White’s eighth dwarf.  Except Tremaine was fortunate enough to get a ring out of the deal (though not a mention on the championship shirt I own). Meanwhile, who the eighth dwarf should be  is still being mulled over by bawdy internet types.

Tremaine, one of those athletic but limited wing player gems.

Tremaine is the first of our Forgotten Pistons selections to actually suit up for another NBA team following his stay in Detroit, although, Detroit was kinda the reason he even got the opportunity. Remember the Palace Brawl with Indy, well, it really decimated Indy’s roster and Fowlkes and two others were given pro-rated one year contracts to “fill in”. For that he gets mad respect from me, but all in all, there’s not much else to respect about his Detroit stint, or his overall career for that matter. I’m not being negative, just straight talkin’. Come on, what else can you say when the guy is considered to be a poor man’s Ronald Dupree. Just look at the stats (I did, somewhat regrettably) and you will see Tremaine’s most productive season doesn’t even touch Dupree’s most stellar season of 6.2 ppg, 3.6 rbs, and 19 min in 47 games (8 starts) with the Bulls in 03/04. Granted, the Bulls did play 21 different players during that season, including starting Sidney Deane and Billy Hoyle a handful of games.

Tremaine might not have been worth much, but he probably dunked on Darko a fair amount of times in practice, and you know what, that’s good enough for me.  Just get use to the fact that there are a few dozen poor man’s Ronald Dupree’s rattling around in the NBA. I promise you will be a better person because of it.

Have any fond memories of Tremaine? Please, please don’t keep them to yourself.

    Ahh Tremaine. Mr. “who’s that dude” when looking at the ’04 Championship roster pic.

  • Corey

    My only fond memory of this guy was that I liked his name a lot. The name sort of stuck in my head, a lot like Germaine Crowell. They both sounded like exotic birds or something.

    Great series of posts. You keep me coming back for more hoping to quiz my bottom-of-the-roster knowledge!

    Ha, yeah, I know what you mean. “Fowlkes would have been a good name for something in a Harry Potter book.

    Harry Potter book?

    @Corey

    I’m enjoying them as well. Perhaps Toasterhands can take a look at the Bucks after he finishes with the Pistons. There is a lot of fodder there: Paul Mokeski, Ervin Johnson, Fred Roberts, Brad Lohaus etc. etc.
