Trade going backwards; Nuggets threaten to trade Carmelo to Knicks

First it was stalled, apparently content to sit idly until the trade deadline on Feb. 24. Now the latest word is that things are actually regressing, and it is looking like things might unravel.

It’s gotten so bad that the Nuggets reportedly issued a stern warning to the Nets to shut down all the media leaks and stop complaining about the process or Denver would trade Carmelo Anthony to the Knicks. It’s like the two most annoying owners in a fantasy basketball league haggling over a trade.

The main source of the trouble seems to be Denver’s late-in-the-process insistence that Al Harrington be moved as part of the megatrade that will send Carmelo Anthony to the Nets. Harrington has $28 million left on his contract, with the last two years only partially guaranteed. It’s a bad contract that the Nets don’t want any part of, but it appears so far that they have been unsuccessful finding another team to take on Harrington’s deal.

The latest dispatch from ESPN’s Chris Broussard is that the deal is “definitely not dead, but they ain’t ‘on the 10-yard line’anymore.” Also comes word that the Houston Rockets, armed with the expiring deals of Yao Ming, Shane Battier and Jared Jeffries, around $32 million altogether, plus a bevy of draft picks and coveted players are making it known that they are ready to take a chance on Carmelo should the current deal fall apart.

I’ll be back tomorrow with more updates as they come in.

Bring Melo to the Knicks. Not really sure why the Nuggies are more interested in Derrick Favors than someone like Wilson Chandler who is putting up Melo lite numbers as a 3rd offensive option. Seems like they are making a statement to Melo.
